About Shahbad

Shahbad or Shahabad Markanda is a small a town on the left banks of River Markanda in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana state in India. The town is also a municipal committee and is located at a distance of around 20 Km from the Ambala Cantonment. The city of Kurukshetra known for its roots in Mahabharata is just 22 Km away from Shahbad. This town is also known as Shahabad or Shabad.

History of Shahbad

The historic background of Shahbad dates back to the times of Prithviraj Chauhan. Muhammad Gauri after his victory over Prithviraj Chauhan donated 52000 Bigha of land to Qutb-ud-din Aibak his commander during the war. Right after the Battle of Tarain in the year 1192, general of Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Gauri formed this town. Many references have been made to Fort of this town during the rule of Mughal dynasty. The victory of Banda Singh Bahadur over Mughals in this place by destroying the famous fort is very popular among the locals and part of many folk lores and folk tales. The town has a Gurudwara that with historical significance. Many temples of those times are still standing intact in the town. Majority of the Muslims from the town relocated to Pakistan during the partition and the Hindus and the Sikhs from Pakistan came and made their home in this town. Shahbad was also visited by Mughal Emperor Emperors Babur & Humayun . One can find remain of A fortified Sarai set up here during the medieval period was used by the troops and the imperial officers who use to move between Delhi and other northern provinces. A resident garrison in the Sarai used to guard the highway all the times. It was Banda Singh Bahadur who plundered Shahabad in the year 1709. Then in 1764, after the downfall of Sirhind, Sikhs occupied all the territory to the south of Sutlej from Singhanvala in Firozpore district to the Shahabad, making Ambala as their headquarters. British took over them in 1850. In 1923 a market was built on the outskirts of the town called Kahan Chand Mandi. As the market did not do well, today it is turned in to a residential locality. In 1960 a new market place called Partap Mandi was built that still exists. The town is well equipped with schools, colleges, hospitals and restaurants. The town also has a municipal library where one can find several Hindi and English books for references. The library is open to all the residents of the town.

Geography of Shahbad

Shahabad is located 22 Km from Kurukshetrea and 21 Km from Ambala on the Grand Trunk Road or the GT road of Delhi-Ambala section. The national highway NH-1 Passes through Shahabad and the railway route of Shahbad falls on the Delhi - Ambala line. The town is situated on the banks of River Markanda. This river is a tribute to Ghaggar and is also believed to be part of ancient Vedic Saraswati River basin system. An ancient temple Markandeya Mandir can be seen on the banks of this river. The temple is named after Maharishi Markandeya. A road from Panchakula connects Shahbad via Ramgarh and Dosarka. There are also other roads that connect Shahbad to other cities like Radaur, Ladwa and Yamunanagar directly. On the Grand Trunk road, Karnal, Nilokheri and Pipli are the towns that fall to the south of Shahbad.

The population of Shahbad is 50,345 as of 2011 census. The total male population of Shahbad is 57% as compared to the female population that constitutes to 43%. The average literacy rate of Shahbad is 87.5% which is 59.5% above the national average. Both the male and the female literacy rate is 86%. 11% of the total population in Shahbad is infants.

Shahbad is an important market for procurement of agricultural products in Haryana. The agri products are sold in the main market or the Mandi. Since the town located on the river banks, the land is very fertile and crops like paddy, wheat and vegetables are grown. Apart from agriculture, poultry farming also contributes significantly to the economy of Shahbad. Shahbad region up to Karnal has number of rice mills that produce very high quality grains. Shahbad also has a sugar mill owned by the Government.

Transport in Shahbad

Shahbad is well connected by road via NH 1. The city is also well connected through railways. There are trains that connect Shahbad to other major cities regularly. The town does not have an airport. Thus, if you are planning your trip via flights, then you need to book a ticket for Chandigarh which is 61 Km away, Shimla 103 Km away or for Ludhiana which is 121 Km away. From there you need to catch train or bus to reach Shahbad.

Shri Markandeshwar Mahadev Shiv Mandir Shahabad Markanda also known as the Shiv Mandir, is managed by the Shri Markandeshwar Mahadev Shiv Mandir Sabha, a body registered under Society Registration Act 1860 in Shahabad Markanda. This is the first ever administrative body in Haryana that is accountable to people for its income and expenditure. Every month the income and expenditure statement is kept on the gates of the temple. The temple has constructed a big Dharmshala where the poor people can get their needs supplies. The complex also has a physiotherapy center and two ambulances that serve the poor for free of cost.

The Rotary club along with Shiv mandir conducts free eye operations for the poor people. The mandir and the club also organizes blood donation camps every year. During the 1st donation camp, the team of Government doctors collected 152 units of blood. The Helpers Shahabad Society saves lives of the victims who met with an accident by responding instantly with the first aid services. The Helpers Shahbad society in association with the PGIMER organizers blood camps where they have together collected 1000 units of blood so far. The Helpers society introduced a scheme called Annakshetra where they serve food and other basic essentials to the poor twice a day in the Hanuman mandir.
